No CHOICE, but to save up to $1500 per year on energy?

By

Consumer advocate CHOICE has launched an electricity bill checking service, as new analysis shows consumers can save up to $1500 on their bills.

CHOICE has launched the "Can I Save on Energy website" to "help people tap into hundreds of dollars in electricity savings".

The group's head of Media, Tom Godfrey, said: "We’ve decided to intervene in the electricity market and cut out the commercial switching sites which are paid by energy companies to sell their products.

“Unfortunately, the electricity market has been stitched up by cosy deals between power companies and commission-driven switching sites with most of the potential savings siphoned off by industry through shadowy backroom deals.

“We’ve found a new way to get people a fair and transparent deal on their energy bill, with trials of our new service delivering individual savings of up to $1500.”

Here we pause to note that "the 2017 Trial of 130 electricity customers in deregulated markets which shows the average saving that could be made per household by switching plans is $400 per year. (It) totals $2.4 billion across four deregulated markets with approximately six million households".

Godfrey continued: “To help consumers access these savings we’re encouraging electricity customers across the country to go to canisaveonenergy.com.au, upload their bill for free and see if they can make a saving.

“Our service dynamically scans all the available deals on the market without you having to decipher the technical jargon.

“Unlike conflicted commission-driven sites, if we can save you more than $99 you can pay for us to continue to monitor the market for you for the next 12 months. Every time we find you a better deal, we’ll change providers for you.

“There are hidden costs with commercial sites. By not giving commissions to energy companies, and charging a $99 annual fee, we are able to put consumers first and give them bigger share of the savings on offer.

“This service is the first of its kind in Australia and acts as your personal agent by scanning your bill and checking it against the best available options before switching you."

If you live in New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia or South East Queensland and want to see if you can take the heat out of your electricity bill, CHOICE urges you to visit the Can I save on energy website, which is "powered by CHOICE’s Transformer service and is the consumer group’s latest market intervention following the successful launch of Do I need health insurance and the free range eggs detector app – CluckAR".
